Member Spotlights is a way to introduce the Mocha Club community to one another and to share our individual stories that brought us to support Africa together.
I first heard about Mocha Club when I got back from a mission trip to Ghana in the summer of 2011. A friend of mine, who went on the trip as well, saw the “I Need Africa More Than Africa Needs Me” video and shared it with our team. It summed up exactly how we felt, and from the first time I saw it, I couldn’t stop thinking about it. Every part of the video is true: the feeling of helplessness, the shame of seeing that joy the people have, and how much we have to learn from Africa. So I began to research the organization and found the story of how it started. The part about how Mocha Club’s unique style of giving was born out of the feeling young people have about recognizing a great need but feeling as though they can’t do anything about it resonated so deeply with me that I couldn’t help but feel connected. I have had the opportunity to tell people about this wonderful organization and give a couple of presentations on it for classes and every time, I find something else that I love about it and the love I have for Africa grows even more. Mocha Club gives me, and everyone involved, the opportunity to do something to help with the great need in Africa and make it matter. That’s why I love Mocha Club, they show me that no matter your financial state or age, you can make a difference and your efforts can matter.
