We are beyond thrilled for our dear friend Ellie Holcomb who is releasing her first full-length album today, As Sure as the Sun.
Ellie has supported Mocha Club through the years touring with her husband as a part of Drew Holcomb and the Neighbors, but has just recently ventured out as a solo artist. Many of you may remember that Ellie traveled with us to Ethiopia last fall to see first-hand the work she supports there. She so beautifully wrote this post after the trip, trying to capture what she saw, felt, and experienced. In the post she talks about one of the tracks off the new record, “Marvelous Light”, and how the lyrics are a reminder of her experience with the ladies of Women at Risk…
“I wrote the lyrics about my story, the way that God called me out of a life of having to pretend to have it all together and into the freedom of coming with all of my brokenness, with all of my burdens to the cross. I’ve found beautiful grace, and hope, and life, and purpose as I’ve discovered that it’s not about me having to be good enough. It’s all about God’s great goodness to us. And what I discovered this week in Ethiopia, was that my story is not much different from the women we met… I don’t mean to compare, or to say that I have any idea what it’s like to walk through what some of these women have and continue to face, but what I do know is that we are sisters. We know what it is to be broken and tired and weary and in need of great rescue, and we know what it is to be accepted and loved and healed and rescued by a great and loving God. We know that He can take broken things and make them beautiful.”
And here is Ellie in Ethiopia singing the last song on the album, “I Want to be Free” . After hearing some of their stories, she was asked to share with the women something on her own heart, and broke into this song. There wasn’t a dry eye in the room, and this song will now always be a memory from our time there.
