Giving is Lovely

Back in May, we had the awesome #KenyaMocha live stream and you all joined Annie and the team to raise money for our teachers at New Dawn! As a thank you, Jessi + Lindsey designed a one-of-a-kind print and anyone who joined Mocha Club that night had a chance to be the winner of the original art piece.

Congratulations to Shannon! She was our lucky recipient of this beautiful canvas.

“I first heard about Mocha Club at the Influence Conference in 2012. Having several friends participate in Purpose Projects, I began following the organizations work more closely. The more I learned, the more I was excited about their commitment to Africa. Seeing Annie Downs, who I also heard at the Influence Conference a year later, partner with Mocha Club sealed the deal for me.

I live in Washington DC, one of the nation’s worst public education systems. I partner with an education focused organization here in DC helping to mentor and tutor underserved children. Seeing this issue first hand has made me realize not only how great the need is, but what a tremendous impact each small contribution can make. When Annie Downs asked people to join her in supporting the New Dawn Education Centre, it was a no brainer. Yes! I want my money and time to support education across the globe, because education changes generations.”

Giving is lovely. Thank you all for giving each month and impacting so many lives in Africa.

Hi guys! Hope you all had great weekends and spent some quality time with the special men in your life – happy late Father’s Day to all you dads!

Last week was an eventful one around our offices – lots of action! We worked hard to finish up some preparation work for an African Leadership trip that will head to Malawi soon. Even though our work may seem indirect in the moment, tasks like this remind us that we are working for something so much bigger than ourselves!

In case you missed it: #KenyaMocha live stream available!

Thank you to all who joined the #KenyaMocha live stream yesterday – we had a great time!  Whether you were tuning in online via twitter or stopping by the office to be a part of the action, we are so thankful for your time to hear the hearts of our team members while they share their passion for New Dawn, education, and the Mocha Club.

In case you missed it – the live stream broadcast is available to watch now!  Listen in while Annie, Lindsay, Jessi, and Lizzie answer how they became part of the #KenyaMocha team, why they started blogging, and why they feel like they need Africa?  We laughed, we cried, and we had a great time so go check it out!

Over the broadcast, we encouraged viewers to join us in supporting Mocha Club and New Dawn by giving up a few mochas a month. A school can only grow and flourish when there is a dedicated and supportive staff on hand. The amazing teachers are what make New Dawn the beacon of hope that it is to the local community. Without these teachers, the school simply can not operate. Currently, while much of the school is making ground-breaking advancements, funds for the incredible staff is it’s greatest need. We want to support these teachers and continue the big impact they have on the students of New Dawn.  If just 31 of us gave $18 a month, we could provide 1 teacher with the necessary funds they need to continue to teaching for one year.

NewDawnStats

In Kenya, a teacher’s average salary is $6500; compare this to an average salary of a teacher in the States at $55,000.  For our New Dawn teachers, it’s more than the salary; it’s the lives that they are impacting everyday through education.

There’s still time to JOIN and receive these free exclusive items!

#KenyaMocha Trip : POSTPONED.

After careful and intentional consideration, the #KenyaMocha team will not be traveling to Kenya next week.

As you may or may not have heard, the past couple weeks have seen an increase in violence in key Kenyan cities, including Nairobi, the team’s destination. On Friday, May 16, a twin bombing in Nairobi heightened ongoing international security concerns.  Fortunately,  New Dawn is located in the Huruma slum outside Nairobi. The school is near the U.S. Embassy, U.N., and several other well protected and respected locations and there seems to be no direct threat to the school or nearby grounds. However, as the safety of each team member is importance to us, we’ve decided it is in everyone’s best interest to postpone the trip.

This was not an easy decision to make. We have kept a close eye on the events unfolding this week in and around Nairobi, as well as maintained constant communication with partners on the ground. Following the State Department’s release of a travel warning and honest discussion between all team members, the team collectively decided to remain in the United States and pursue the trip at a later time.

The purpose of the trip, however, is not deterred. The New Dawn Educational Centre in the Huruma slum is still an important, inspiring, and essential part of Nairobi’s future — and we want to make known the incredible leaders, teachers, and students that continue to meet there each day.  We fully believe this week allows us to still celebrate the students and teachers at New Dawn from the United States. We are committed to traveling to New Dawn when conditions permit in the future. We look forward to sharing with you the impact Mocha Club members like you have made at New Dawn – thank you for continuing to support this extraordinary project!

In the meantime, please stay tuned as we convene with the #KenyaMocha team and continue to share about New Dawn and discover opportunities to support the incredible work being done.

#KenyaMocha Trip: ONE WEEK AWAY!

There is only one week left before the #KenyaMocha team leaves for their trip over to Africa to visit New Dawn Educational Center.  As you may remember, last February Annie Downs did a Purpose Project to raise $10,000 for Education.  Many of you were a part of completing that goal and we chose one of you to join Annie on her adventure.  Lizzie, along with Jessi, Nish, and Lindsay will be traveling to Kenya to meet the students and staff of New Dawn and see firsthand who the 10K Purpose Project funds impact!

Today on her blog, Annie shares her feeling about going to Africa next week!  Read and follow along with her these next couple of weeks as she prepares, experiences, and debriefs her time with our partners in Kenya.
