I absolutely LOVE the nonprofit Mocha Club and everything they stand for. I first heard about Mocha Club ages ago at a Matt Wertz concert… My freshman year of college, the fall of ’08, a few of my friends and I roadtripped from Athens, Georgia to Chattanooga, Tennessee to see Matt Wertz in concert. It was so fun- he always puts on an amazing show! He spoke about Mocha Club and what it meant to him during intermission, and I knew I just had to join.

Fast forward to that summer. I was back home in Nashville and wanted to get an internship and give back to my community… so where did I land? At Mocha Club, of course! I was a part of that very first intern group, and it was a complete blast. To this day I will never forget one of the first things I did at Mocha Club… I was in a room with Barrett Ward, founder of Mocha Club and FashionABLE, and he wanted to narrow down the project areas and clarify their focus. So we sat there, discussed, prayed, and finalized the maybe 6-7 project areas down to the 5 that still remain today. It was such a great moment, and I felt so humbled to be included in that lasting decision. Hearing his heart behind each one of the projects was moving and made me even more impassioned for their cause.

As an intern at Mocha Club, we created the Campus Rep program. So, naturally, as I transitioned back to campus life at the University of Georgia, I also became one of the first campus reps. I set up booths all over the place and championed Mocha Club’s message. I spoke a fraternity and sorority chapter meetings, and even had a leadership team. At the first ever Mocha Club meeting, my boyfriend of just a week at the time (now husband), was the only male to attend. (When I learned that he was already a Mocha Club member, joining at a Micah Dalton concert around the same time I joined, I just knew he was a winner!)

We recently got to volunteer with Mocha Club at a Dave Barnes + Matt Wertz concert in Atlanta, where we now call home. It was a complete full circle moment for us. We were crazy and signed up knowing we would have a 6-week old baby at home. We were exhausted, but oh so thankful to continue to partner with Mocha Club. Thank you to those of you who give to Mocha Club- know that your dollars are well spent: jobs are created, bellies are filled, thirst is quenched, and love is shared.

1 person. 10 years. 201 Mochas. 1,000s of lives.

Amanda has been a Mocha Club member since the beginning. She joined back in August of 2005 and has been giving up her mochas ever since to support our development projects all over the continent of Africa. She has given up 201 mochas and impacted thousands of lives. We caught up with her to chat about her involvement with Mocha Club and ask how much she’s been missing those mochas…

amandaWhen did you first hear about Mocha Club and join?

I first heard about Mocha Club at Matt Wertz’s rep show in July 2005 in Nashville. A friend and I were among the first to sign up, and I am proud to have been a member for over ten years.

What makes you passionate about Mocha Club and be part of it?

Knowing that a small donation of $7 a month can do so much for people in need (for example, feeding a family of 4 or providing clean water for a year) makes me a firm believer that there’s no reason to NOT be a part of Mocha Club. I earn $7 in less than a half hour at my job on any given day- if I can afford to buy lunch out once in awhile, there’s no reason I can’t afford to not put that money toward a cause where it can do so much more than provide one restaurant-quality meal to one person that doesn’t really need it.

You’ve been a member for 10 years! How does it feel to have been giving up mochas for that long – do you know how many you’ve given up?

It was hard at first, but I’ve struck a compromise with myself by simply going from fancy coffee drinks to hot or iced black coffee that I make at home. If I do the math, that comes out to…

We actually did the math for you – you’ve given up a total of 201 mochas throughout the past 10 years! Does that surprise you? Have you even missed them?

I have definitely not missed them, and neither has my wallet or waistline :) That doesn’t mean I can’t enjoy a treat once in awhile- but only when they’re buy one get one free or half price!

Would you tell a friend about Mocha Club?

I absolutely would- and I have! I have worked the Mocha Club table a few times at shows, and I love engaging in conversation with people so they can learn just how far $7 a month goes. The satisfaction I get from knowing that a small sacrifice is doing so much to help people in need far outweighs the cost of my monthly donation.

I can only hope that this organization is here for years to come so that it may continue to use live music as a tool for building a bridge between fans and the people that so desperately need our help. It’s easy to take what we have for granted (clean water, access to food, etc.), but making a small sacrifice of $7 a month is an easy way for anyone to make a difference.

The phrase “I need frica more than Africa needs me” became more tangible over thlast two years. I lived on the M/V Africa Mercy, a non-profit hospital ship that provides free surgeries for some of the world’s poorest nations. But while living in Africa, it was not the poverty that impacted me most- it was the strength, the joy and the determination to press on that inspired me. I need Africa to remind me that it is more about what we have on the inside- our God-given strength- than any material possession that will allow us to achieve big dreams. Giving up one mocha at a time.

After having one of the most fun & blessed years of my life last year, I decided 2014 would be about what I can do to bless others’ lives. At the beginning of the new year, my goal was to be more involved in my city, volunteer, and GIVE. I heard about Mocha Club over dinner at Chick-fil-A with Char & a month later, Matt Wertz shared his passion for MC at his show. For a week, I could not get Matt’s message out of my head. He said, “even if MC isn’t where you want to give, give somewhere.” I took that message to heart and decided that MC was where I wanted to give. My monetary giving is a small amount of change, but it is impacting life change in a big way!

When I decide to make giving a priority for the new year, I was really nervous about how I would budget it into an already tight budget. After hearing that I could give $9 a month, I was convinced I could find $9 worth of unnecessary purchases in my monthly spending and turn that into positive spending. Now that I am giving, I realize there was nothing to be nervous about. I do not even miss those unnecessary purchases and each month when I see my $9 charge for Mocha Club, I know I am helping create change.

Even if I help change one life, I am making a difference.

When I wake up in the morning, I don’t have to worry about whether or not I can have a cup of coffee.  I don’t worry about not being able to eat, or not being able to shower.  The temperature in my home is very comfortable, and I always feel safe.  On the rare occasions when I’m not feeling well, I have doctors to care for me and insurance to help cover the costs.  I’m blessed with a job, and although I’m far from wealthy, I live a very nice life.  What if that wasn’t the case?  What if my life was opposite of what I’m living?  The truth is that many people live a life opposite of mine.  I can hardly imagine how one could survive.  ~  Mocha Club provides me with the opportunity to help others who desperately need help.  For me, it’s a choice: Hoard your blessings, or spread your blessings.  I choose to spread mine.  Simply put, the money I give to Mocha Club is far more valuable in their hands than it is in mine.

“Be a giver.  The rewards of being a giver far exceed those who just take.  We live in a world that needs givers.  Financial giving, mentoring, volunteering and the list goes on.  Just do it.  It’s not only a responsible act, it’s a good choice.”

After realizing there was more I wanted to offer the world I started doing some research into what I wanted to do. I believe in helping others and often time in doing so you help yourself more. I think Ghandi said it well “the best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in serving others” I had heard Matt Wertz talk about the Mocha Club so I decided to look into it. I immediately knew this is where I wanted to sow into. My hope now is that this small gesture will help change someone’s life .

Last year, I had the amazing opportunity to spend four months in Uganda. I met dozens of children who were denied the opportunity of an education because of finances. Just because I can’t send every child to school, doesn’t mean I shouldn’t help the few that I can. The Mocha Club gives me a chance to make a difference. I love the heart behind the organization and the concept really enables people to create change when they otherwise thought they couldn’t.

What I love most about Mocha Club is that it’s so much more than charity. My donation each month clears the path toward economic freedom for women whose options are few, and often heartbreaking. Having met some of these women myself and seeing the hope alive in their eyes, I know my small offering helps keep their families healthy and intact. It gives them dignity and honor. It builds a legacy for their children. It’s powerful to be a small part of something bigger than myself.

The reason I love and support Mocha Club is that it provides sustainable relief through relationships. Instead of dropping off crates and putting bandaids on very difficult circumstances, MC has local representatives at each project who are hand-delivering relief while also training people and instilling big change in surrounding communities. I saw this first hand when I personally visited every single Mocha Club project!

I joined Mocha Club at a Dave Barnes concert because after hearing about the organization, I learned that the value of $9/month in Africa was immeasurable compared to what $9/month would be used for here in the U.S.  Through Mocha Club, I got a chance to go to South Africa and meet the people of the Cape Town townships.  We helped build a preschool where children now have a place to go during the day and hear about Jesus.  I got to see, first hand, the people that are positively impacted and forever changed through the money that people give to Mocha Club.  I will always be a member of Mocha Club because my money each month provides support for that preschool that I helped to build.  Kids are now able to have a place to go to eat, play, and experience the love of God all because I, along with the other members of Mocha Club, agreed to give up a Starbucks or two a month.  I’m humbled and honored to have the opportunity to partner with Mocha Club to serve the wonderful people of Africa.
